Itinerary

Day 1 - Sunday 6 November 2022

Melbourne - Launceston

Welcome to Sisterhood Womens Travel.  Your tour hostess and fellow travellers will meet you at the designated departure point at Melbourne Airport for your flight to Launceston. Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight.

Upon arrival into Launceston we'll meet our friendly coach captain and travel into the city, Tasmania's second largest. Enjoy a short orientation tour and a visit to the beautiful Cataract Gorge with its cliff-side gardens, peacocks, pools, suspension foot bridge and one of the longest single span chairlifts in the world (ride is optional and own expense). The remainder of the afternoon is yours to relax before dinner at the hotel or at a nearby restaurant.

Overnight: Best Western Plus, Launceston (or similar)

Day 2 - Monday 7 November 2022

North West Coast - Stanley (B,L,D)

After breakfast we'll travel to the rich farm lands of the North West Coast. Along the way visit the historic village of Deloraine, home of the largest arts and craft fair in Australia. Visit Ashgrove Cheese and the Anvers Chocolates to sample their quality products. Enjoy lunch at a wonderful café in the seaside town of Turners Beach with an opportunity to have a photo taken at the "Big Penguin".

In the afternoon we continue to the very far North West corner of the Island and spend some time exploring the quaint seaside fishing village of Stanley. Here we can climb "The Nut" or take the chairlift for a more relaxed ride to the top. Dinner tonight at our hotel or at a nearby restaurant.

Overnight: Tall Timbers, Smithton (or similar)

Day 3 - Tuesday 8 November 2022

Tarkine Wilderness (B,L,D)

Today we will discover the Tarkine Wilderness area. Unlike many places in the world the Tarkine remains as a hidden treasure and a forgotten wilderness. This expanse of uninterrupted 477,000 hectares of Tarkine wilderness is the largest single track of temperate rainforest in Australia and holds ancient relics of both plants and animals dating back millennia, and unique habitats not found anywhere else. Breathe the purest air in the world as you look out over the planets largest uninterrupted stretch of ocean reaching all the way to South America before touching landfall. Dinner tonight at our hotel or at a nearby restaurant.

Overnight - Tall Timbers, Smithton (or similar)

Day 4 - Wednesday 9 November 2022

Cradle Valley - Dove Lake (B)

After breakfast we will travel back to Wynyard via the spectacular Boat Harbour Beach and Table Cape and then on to the rainforest and mineral rich mountains of the west coast to Cradle Valley. On arrival, we will board the shuttle bus into picturesque Dove Lake at the foot of the crags of Cradle Mountain and visit Waldheim forest home of pioneer Gustav Weindorfer.

After checking into our hotel relax in the beautiful surroundings, visit the wilderness gallery or take a short rainforest walk before dinner.

Overnight: Cradle Mountain Hotel (or similar)

Day 5 - Thursday 10 November 2022

Tullah - Zeehan - Strahan (B,D)

After breakfast we'll continue through mountain ranges, past swift-flowing rivers, steep gorges and former mining towns. Tullah, one such town, has since served as a base for the construction of hydro electric power development and is now almost surrounded by superb lakes. Gold was discovered in Rosebery in 1893 and Zeehan was a former ‘silver city’. The port of Strahan situated on beautiful Macquarie Harbour is our destination this afternoon. Explore the village and wharf area where one of the few remaining Huon pine sawmills still processes logs felled in the rainforests of western Tasmania and has its history with the ‘piners’ who gathered this beautiful timber, much prized for boat building. Dinner tonight at our hotel or nearby restaurant

Overnight - Strahan Village, Strahan (or similar)

Day 6 - Friday 11 November 2022

Gordon River Cruise - Strahan (B,L,D)

Today we cruise the incomparable Gordon River into the heart of Tasmania's wilderness and the edge of World Heritage. Cross vast Macquarie Harbour, past Sarah Island, worst convict settlement of all and follow the Gordon through stands of ancient Huon pine, sassafras and myrtle rainforest to step ashore for a wilderness board-walk at Heritage Landing. Voyage to Hell's Gates, the aptly named harbour entrance where many early ships were destroyed by ferocious ocean swells.

On return to Strahan, we will have free time to relax or explore the village including the Visitor Centre and Huon pine saw mill. This evening we have the option (own expense) to see Australia's longest running play "The Ship that Never Was" which tells the dramatic and hilarious true story of The Great Escape from Sarah Island.

Overnight - Strahan Village, Strahan (or similar)

Day 7 - Saturday 12 November 2022

Central Highlands - "The Wall" - Hobart (B)

Departing Strahan we'll travel via Queenstown, spectacular Mt. Owen, the winding Gormanston Hill and ghost towns of the Chamonoi Valley. We cross Lake Burbury to enter the Wild Rivers National Park and experience the wonders of Gondwanaland during a short rainforest walk to Nelson Waterfalls. At Derwent Bridge visit “The Wall in The Wilderness”, an extraordinary work of art being crafted telling the story of Tasmania’s Central Highlands. In Tarraleah Gorge view the penstocks and workings of an early Hydro-electric installation before crossing the Central Plateau. We'll descend through hills and hop fields of the Derwent Valley and on to our Hobart accommodation. Dinner tonight at the hotel or at a one of the many Hobart restaurants nearby.

Overnight - The Old Woolstore, Hobart (or similar)

Day 8 - Sunday 13 November 2022
