Known as the Pearl (or Jewel) of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka was a pleasant surprise to the sisters.
Our first impressions were the open and friendly faces, always wanting to enhance our experience. Our wonderful local guide Pathum, did everything he could to show us his country, especially the diverse cultures, based very much around the religious ceremonies of Buddhism, Hinduism, Muslim and Christian. We visited temples (stupas), to learn of the rich history of Buddhism, practiced by the majority the Sinhalese population. The loving kindness (Metta), this gentle, non-confrontational approach was so refreshing with always the greeting “Ayubowan”, may you live long.
Known for its nature and wildlife, we experienced the beautiful mountain areas around Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella, and a train ride through lush rain forests and tea plantations. A challenging jeep safari had us searching for elephants but also discovering other wildlife along the way. The sisters also had the opportunity to climb the famous Sigiria, Lion Rock. Two made it to the top, quite an achievement, with some reaching Lion’s Paw Terrace (halfway up) and the others were happy to remain at the Boulder Garden, a sacred and spiritual retreat.
The island is best known for its rest and relaxation at the many beachfront resorts. We arrived to a day of pampering in Negombo. After a ten hour flight, this was bliss! We could also indulge in relaxation at our Galle and Colombo hotels to prepare for our journey home.
Let’s not forget that Sri Lanka is renowned for its gems, from precious (blue sapphire) to semi precious, with moonstone being a popular one with our group. It is the equivalent to Australia’s opal, celebrated for its blue sheen. How does a gal decide with such a variety to choose from? One might say a first world problem!
Most importantly for me our Sri Lankan Surprise group was made up of wonderful women, sharing the discovery of this beautiful island, in good humour and companionship. One can’t put a price on these gems!
Thank you Sri Lankan Sisters.
