
Entry into Norfolk Island
A valid passport is the preferred means of documentation; however, photographic identification such as a driver's licence is acceptable for visitors from Australia.
Climate
Climate is subtropical with temperatures ranging from 19-28° in Summer and 12-21° in Winter. The water temperature ranges from 19-22° seasonally.
Clothing
Clothing is comfortable and casual all year round. Warmer clothes are recommended for evenings and during the winter months. Remember your hat and sunscreen in the warmer months and a torch for evening walks.
Communications
The island is not part of the Australian mobile network, so you will need to purchase a local SIM card to use your mobile phone. You can buy a starter pack which gives you a SIM card & a small credit.
A selected few accommodation places offer free wi-fi, otherwise you can purchase a wi-fi card to use at the hot spot areas around the place. There is an internet cafe located in the Village. The local paper comes out every Saturday, Radio Norfolk (89.9fm) can be heard daily, & the Island has Australian digital TV channels.
To call the Australian mainland from Norfolk Island, dial 0061 and drop the 0 from the state area code. Norfolk Island’s international dialling code is +6723.
Getting Around
Livestock have the right of way, and don’t forget the ‘Norfolk wave’. There is one taxi service, and there are various places to hire push bikes.
Language
The main language is English, but you will often hear the islanders speaking the local language, which is a mix of Tahitian and Old English inherited from the Bounty descendants.

Banks
The currency is the Australian dollar. Commonwealth and Westpac Bank branches are located in town. Major credit cards are accepted. There is one ATM available at the Commonwealth Bank.
Medical
The NI Hospital provides a dental clinic, pharmacy, and a 24-hour emergency service. Medical treatment on Norfolk Island is covered by Australian Medicare; emergency medical treatment will be covered by Medicare. Please bring your Medicare, Pensioner, and/or Healthcare cards with you to the island. Travel insurance is highly recommended.
Postage
Norfolk Island has its own postage stamps and Philatelic Bureau.
Shopping
Traditionally, most shops close on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and all day Sunday. Supermarkets and selected retailers are open 7 days. Both the Saturday Farmers’ Markets and the Sunday Markets are held at the Bicentennial Complex
