Entry into Europe
Please ensure that your passport has at least 6 months validity from your return date left on your passport. No extra visas are required for entry into Iceland for Australian passport holders.
Continue to monitor www.smartraveller.gov.au for the most up-to-date information.

The new European Entry/Exit System (EES) for all non-EU nationals, including Australians, travelling in or out of Europe, is expected to start in October 2025

Weather
Iceland is starting to cool down in September. The highest temperatures hover around the low teens mark on average and the evenings will be cool (low single figures). Iceland's climate is unpredictable and sometimes experiences snow, sand and ash storms.

What to Pack
September is the month to pack for wet weather. Bring with you good thermal underwear to keep yourself cozy and warm. Your middle layer should be a sweater and pants, followed by a waterproof jacket and rainproof hiking shoes or rain boots.
Don't forget a warm hat, scarf, socks and gloves. Slippers are a good idea for hotel rooms.

Travel for comfort rather than for style.  Comfortable walking shoes are a must. Bring a reusable water bottle.

Currency
Iceland's currency is the Icelandic Kroner (ISK). The coins in circulation are 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 Krónas. The notes are 500, 1.000, 5.000 and 10.000 Krónas. Please note that in Iceland, periods are used as thousands separators and commas are used as decimal marks. (e.g., 5.000 ISK, 25,5% VAT, etc.).
When visiting Iceland, you'll find that the most convenient way to make purchases is by card or mobile payment. In fact, locals rarely use cash since most merchants accept credit and debit cards even for small purchases.

ATMs are available and credit cards are widely used. Contactless payment, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, are widely accepted.

Internet & WiFi access
You should not encounter many problems with finding an internet connection for your smartphone, laptop or other web-enabled devices, as Iceland is very tech-savvy and you'll find Wi-Fi access throughout the city centre, usually with free connection, in hotels, cafes, coffee houses and bars.
Outside of Reykjavik, many hotels and petrol stations offer Internet connection, either free of charge or for a small additional fee. Some also have computers for guest use in the reception or lounge areas.

If you prefer a pre-paid local SIM card, Vodafone sells mobile internet starter kits (3 GB included) for smartphones at their stores and resellers.

Drinking Water
Drink tap water instead of bottled water.
Iceland has some of the best quality drinking water in the world. It is considered "pristine and free of contamination." At first, you may notice an “eggy” smell when running hot water in a sink or shower—that is simply a naturally occurring smell from the geothermal water source, and it poses no health risks. Just run the tap for a couple of seconds first.
Bring a reusable water bottle

Luggage
Please keep your luggage to a minimum. Do not take what you cannot handle yourself. Where available, the hotel staff will assist with taking your luggage to your room (for a tip) so please keep this in mind when packing.

Electricity
Iceland uses Northern European electrical standards (50 Hz/220 volts), so converters may be required for small electrical appliances brought from home. Some appliances, such as chargers for laptops, digital cameras or mobile phones, may already be compatible with multiple voltages and may just need a travel adapter. Iceland uses the standard Europlug socket with two round prongs.

Health While Travelling
There is always a risk to your health when travelling, and it is better to be prepared. It is recommended to take with you some diarrhoea medication in case you come down with a stomach bug. It is also a good idea to bring along some hydrolyte for dehydration purposes. We also recommend Travelan to help protect your stomach from any nasties (available over the counter at any pharmacy). For any other vaccination/health/medical concerns with regards to travelling please consult your GP or visit a Travel Doctor.

Travel Insurance
It is mandatory for travellers to have comprehensive travel insurance; please ensure you have provided Sisterhood Womens Travel with a copy of your policy including 24/7 Emergency Contact Number.

WhatsApp Group
Please make sure you download WhatsApp onto your phone before departure. This App will be your communication tool whilst on tour, and your tour hostess will contact you before departure to set you up in your tour WhatsApp group.  It’s also a lovely way to remain in touch with friends upon your return.

Changes to Itinerary
We do our best to give Sisters an enjoyable, trouble-free tour experience, but occasionally, even the best-laid plans can go awry.  We cannot rule out any changes to the itinerary and ask that you maintain a positive, upbeat and flexible attitude.
This is especially relevant to travel in Iceland, due to weather unpredictability.
