Lord Howe Island Escape - September 2026- Hostess Roundup - Kathy Lang

The 2026 Lord Howe Island Sisters were lucky enough to experience all the spectacular surroundings this nature-filled island had to offer. Some hiked the various trails, while others enjoyed easier walks along the pristine beaches, Ned's Beach being a particular favourite. We also viewed the underwater world from a glass-bottom boat, spotting coral, colourful fish, and the odd turtle. Two sisters braved snorkelling,  the rest of us were quite happy just to observe. On our walks, Peter, our knowledgeable guide, regaled us with island history and "walked and talked" us through the lush flora and fauna. We wined and dined well, with local kingfish starring on every menu. Gin tasting was a hit, and a few bottles came home with us; the locally produced flavours, made with island botanicals, are quite unique.

Lord Howe has a population of fewer than 400 people, and a cap of 400 visitors at any one time. Everywhere we went, we ran into most of the people we'd met on the flight over, as each restaurant is only open on certain nights, to share the tourism income around. Everyone seemed extremely relaxed and friendly- the perfect formula for a holiday escape. Our accommodation, Leanda Lei, was very comfortable and just a short walk to the beach. The locals take such pride in their island, and they all seemed to work together to ensure we experienced as much of this beautiful destination as possible.
