During your tour, explore the attracting neighborhood of Cimiez — where Queen Victoria used to spend her winters. Discover stylish galleries along the Promenade des Arts, and take in sites of interest such as the Acropolis Center and the Modern Art Museum. Admire fine frescoes and intricate carvings on the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, and stop in Place Garibaldi — the bustling public square in the heart of Nice’s historic Old Town. Day 4 - Sunday 5 April 2020

Explore Nice (B)

Today we continue our discovery of Nice.  If you enjoy walking for the best views over Nice’s red-tiled rooftops, climb the winding staircases up to this wooded outcrop on the eastern edge of the old town. It’s been occupied since ancient times; archaeological digs have revealed Celtic and Roman remains, and the site was later occupied by a medieval castle that was razed by Louis XIV in 1706 (only the 16th-century Tour Bellanda remains). There are various entrances, including one beside the tower, or you can cheat and ride the free lift.  At the top you’ll find plenty of green space and a wealth of stunning views over the old town, the port and inland to the Provençal hills all the way to the Alps. The shady trees offer welcome respite on a blazing hot day, and there’s also an artificial waterfall built during the 18th century.  Plenty of fabulous photo opportunities.

Tonight we'll regroup for dinner to share the day's experiences.

Everything is organized in order to allow us to discover what Provencal gastronomy truly means. We'll end the tour in the old town with a free afternoon to explore.

Day 11 - Sunday 12 April 2020

Free Day in Beaune (B)

Today we have a free day in Beaune to continue our discovery of this quaint french village.  A short walk from our hotel is the must see Beaune Hospices also known as Hotel-Dieu de Beaune to locals.  A 15th century alsmshouse used as a hospital for the poor people of the region recovering from the Hundred Years’ War. It was actually used as a fully functioning hospital until the late 1970s; it now houses a museum.  The building itself is now regarded as one of the finest architectural gems in France; it was designed by the Flemish architect Jacques Wiscrère, which explains the striking resemblances to architecture typically found in the Flanders region of Belgium. The hospices’ façade is an exceptional example of Northern Renaissance architecture and features an abundance of panel painting, long half-timber galleries and, of course, the signature gabled roof and its multi-colored and geometric tiles. There are also plenty of ironworks, carvings, and tapestries inside the hospices’ walls.  Entry is EUR7.50 per person and well worth a visit.

If you are a wine lover and do not want to pass up the opportunity to visit and taste some of the local Burgundy wines and cheese a visit to Alain Hess Food & Wine Store.  It is a fantastic cheese and wine shop, probably the best in the entire city. The array of cheeses -- all lovingly displayed in a large glass case -- is enough to make any cheese lover salivate and instantly reach for his wallet. The wine shop downstairs is also impressive.

Tonight we'll regroup for dinner to share the day's experiences.
